Can I choose who provides my electricity?
Yes! The energy market has been deregulated in states such as Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas and you now have the option to choose who provides your electricity.
What is deregulation?
For a long time, in order to ensure that all consumers had a reliable supply of electricity, the government created rules that regulated the energy industry and prohibited anyone from competing with local utility companies. This meant that the utilities controlled all three components of the energy industry - the generation facilities, the infrastructure required for delivery, and the retail sale of energy. Unfortunately, the absence of competition stifled innovation and created state-sanctioned monopolies that had little incentive to provide their customers with choices and competitive pricing for their energy needs. Thus, in order to promote innovation and provide consumers with the best service at the lowest price, many states have chosen deregulation and opened competitive retail markets. Under deregulation, utilities are no longer allowed to provide all three components of the energy industry - they must divest themselves of retail relationships with customers and allow energy suppliers such as Energy Plus to compete for their business. As a result, consumers now have the opportunity to choose who will supply their energy and how they would like that energy to be procured.
